As ordered by the lovely Lorraine, today I went to the cinema. I saw "The Producers". I would have preferred to have seen "The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe", but Lorraine has expressed an interest in seeing that film this weekend, so there it is. (I'm still going to see "Brokeback Mountain" this weekend, regardless of any plans she may or may not have for us over those days.)
So, "The Producers" it was. I liked it, most of it. It was way too long, though, and some of the songs were a bit weak, but it was good enough for a bored Pynchon afternoon movie experience. Nathan Lane was quite brilliant, but that was no surprise. Matthew Broderick and Uma Thurman were OK, but it was pretty obvious that neither of them are musical or stage performers. I just loved Gary Beach and Roger Bart as the campest couple to ever appear in a movie musical.
I cannot make any comparison with the original version of "The Producers" because I have never managed to watch more than the first 20 minutes of that movie. It is one of those fabled cult movies (like "The Blues Brothers") which I have never quite managed to get.
We ate leftovers this evening. We will be eating leftovers until August. I developed a headache which remarkably dissipated when my Brother called to ask me to check if Blueyonder was working OK. It was. Oh, joy... I'll be round at my Brother's this weekend messing around with his computer setup. Pray for me...

I'm dying to see Brokeback Mountain! But, as I'm on a budget, I won't be seeing it until it appears on DVD. Let me know if it's as good as all the reviews, but no spoilers.
I am glad you posted a review of the Producers. Greg and I had been thinking about going to see that movie but weren't quite sure how good it would be.
I don't know that I quite care to see Brokeback Mountain. I love cowboys and all of that but I am a traditionalist and prefer the man/woman love interest, not the man/man. I hear it is supposed to be good though. I'll be interested to hear what you think of it and if it is worth the ticket price.

Hey,
Interesting that you want to see Brokeback Mountain. My brother (who is gay) explained the storyline (he is dying to see it). He said that women will go and gay men, but that hetero males will not. He said there is no eye candy in it for them. I will have to tell him he is stereotyping you guys!! Let us know how that one is, it sounds very sad to me.

As a straight female, I enjoyed it. It has both home and hetero action, although Michelle Williams (the other chick from "Dawson's Creek") is made up to look very dowdy so not sure I'd categorize her as "eye candy" in this particular film. (But Heath Ledger must have thought so, as they just had a baby together.)
I read the short story first, so knew what would happen, but still found it a moving and, yes, sad love story. As all the reviewers have said, it's only incidentally about a man loving a man - it could be about another time period when a white man loving a black woman is impossible, or a Jewish woman loving a Catholic man, etc. It's the universal story of being unable to fully express your love because of the world and time you live in.

LB - Ditto, my friend.
Mark - Good idea. I might change his homepage. :-)
I really do want to see "Brokeback Mountain" because it seems like it could be a really good film. No other reason really. Gay characters? Oh, fuck off... I am hardly going to run screaming from the cinema because two men kiss or do other things.
(Remember David Cronenberg's film "Crash"? I liked that film a lot. Lot's of sexual activity between men and women in that film. As soon as James Spader kissed Elias Koteas 8 people walked out. Go figure. Obviously it was going to corrupt their poor, addled brains.)
I once went to see the film "In And Out". You know the one. Matt Dillon outs Kevin Kline accidentally, causing fun and frolics as Kevin Kline is about to get married. I loathed it. I thought it was shit. I said as much to a gay friend of Lorraine's who said, and I quote, "You didn't like it because you are straight and you didn't understand it".
Eh? What's not to understand? I know a piss poor film when I see one, or maybe I don't? After all, I liked "xXx". :-(
